Hi World!
I have been burning since I was eight years old. Actually the only thing I burned then was my brother's ear but I think that counts.
In the late 70's, I became an apprentice to a Master Woodburner in Gatlinburg, TN. This was when that town was the Mecca for high quality crafts and crafters. I learned and practiced new techniques for two years. I was accepted into the most prestigious Art guild in town.
The death of my mentor cut my apprenticeship short but I continued to burn. I pursued my craft while working as an economics professor. During this time, I have had commissions in 38 states and 12 countries. I have worked for designers, PBS, and the National Civil Rights Museum. I have had a picture hanging in the US Capitol Building in Washington, DC.
I am currently a juried member of Indiana Artisan, the organization whose purpose is to identify the top artists in the state of Indiana.
My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.
I am inspired by those who have taken their art beyond art shows. By those who have used their art to teach, to motivate, and to remember. I want my art to not just be a picture, but to be a creator of nostalgia. I want to duplicate the old Masters in a new medium to bring 300 year old pictures into today's art. And I want to use my art to grow faith, to teach and inspire. What more could I ask for?
If you are here, you probably already know about my craft, woodburning, or as some will call it, pyrography. Pyrography is Greek for "writing with fire", which is what I do. I use a simple tool similar to a soldering iron and I burn realistic type images in wood. Every picture I do is burned by hand. These are not laser engraved. My pieces really are true hand crafted art. Look into my portfolios to see the detail that is possible, not with pencil, but with a hot iron placed on wood
It's a matter of heart. Art should be experienced. It should be felt. Art is not just something to hang on a wall and collect dust. It should be alive and moving. This is what I am aiming for. In my work, I am striving to give my friends an experience, perhaps a visit to their past, or to their dreams, or their imagination.
